Prayer of the Month

Baby declared dead, born alive - Alwin Joseph, Dubai

This is to give testimony to a miracle our Lord performed in our lives. My wife and I were planning for a second child after 10 years of marriage, though we already had an 11-year-old daughter named Amanda. When we were trying for our second child, my wife was diagnosed with fibroids and cysts in her ovary and all the doctors told us that it is very difficult to conceive. Even if she conceived, it would be dangerous for the mother and the baby. One of the doctors asked her to take up the treatment for fertility but we refused as we trusted in our Lord alone.

In 2011, we had planned to attend the retreat during our visit to India and we reached Cochin, my home town in June. When my wife felt dizzy and weak during the journey we doubted that she might have conceived, but when we consulted the doctor we found that she was pregnant, but there is no heart beat from the baby. She was asked to undergo the test after a week, and it was during this week that we attended the retreat.

During one of the sessions, my name was called out by Fr. Michael and he announced at the altar that day that, “Alwin, today Lord has made a covenant with you that he will never abandon you” which were his exact words.

After the retreat, straightaway we went to consult the doctor and took the test again but the result was negative. And the doctor told my wife to undergo D & C as it needs to be taken out since there’s no heartbeat. We were completely shattered. The next day we were supposed to go to my wife’s house at Pune and the doctor told us to do the test again after a week in Pune. In Pune we consulted one of the famous and experienced Gynecologists and after the test she also suggested that my wife should undergo D & C to remove the dead embryo. After a few days again we did the test and still it was negative and the doctor booked 5th June for doing D & C. On the previous day we decided to undertake one more test. We were completely down and dejected and my wife was crying at the thought of D & C, as her body is going to be a graveyard of an unborn. I was thinking and praying, “Lord you made a covenant that you will never abandon me, remember you covenant O Lord, why you have forsaken me”. May be God wants to give us a healthy child, I consoled myself, let His will happen.

After the test my wife called and told me that the result is positive, I couldn’t believe the news. The doctor who did the test said “beautiful heartbeat”. These were her exact words. PRAISE THE LORD. When my wife told the doctor that she was supposed to go for D & C next day, the doctor wondered why she is doing D & C since it’s a healthy heart beat and everything seems to be fine and normal. My wife explained our ordeal to the doctor and the doctor immediately called the Gynecologist and informed the news. The Gynecologist was really shocked to hear the news and she had no words to say. Then she suggested my wife to take complete rest and instructed her not to drive as well which was not possible as she is working.

We flew back to Dubai on 7th June and we knew that its Lord’s work and we entrusted everything to the Lord and my wife started going to office trusting Lord. We started consulting one of the famous and experienced Gynecologists here and everything thing was going smoothly until third semester. During one of the tests in third semester, the doctor suggested my wife to go for further tests as she doubted some abnormalcy, that the child will likely to have some abnormality mainly Down syndrome. Doctor suggested it is good to undergo Amniocentesis to confirm everything is OK as my wife is over 39 years. Chances are high that the children born of women above 35 years of age are likely to born with Down syndrome.

We could not even bear the thought of it, having a child with Down syndrome. We were directed to consult another famous Gynecologist who is also a fetal expert. When we consulted her showing all the reports, she explained us that there is 1% risk chance of abortion or fetal damage while conducting this test. Also she asked us one question, what we would do in case the Amniocentesis test result is positive. Are we going to abort it? We both said abortion is against our faith and we would still keep the baby. If it’s so why we are doing this test, the doctor herself discouraged us in undergoing this test. We trusted in our Lord and prayed to Mother Mary and went ahead.

On 26th March 2012, at 08.25 am, she delivered a healthy baby girl. ‘PRAISE THE LORD, HALLELLUIAH.

After so much mental agony and the stress which we had gone through since the day of conception, we were blessed with a baby girl. Lord answered our prayer finally. In spite of modern medical science’s findings and verdict, our Lord made the impossible possible. This was nothing but Lord’s work, absolutely no doubt. She is going to be one year old now, and we plan to attend the retreat with the baby soon. The Lord kept His words; He will never abandon his children.

Our Lord is an awesome God. May the Lord bless all those who trust in Him.
