Prayer of the Month

Healing Of Fatal Rare Disease - Mrs. Shylaja Nambiar, Kerala

My first retreat in July 1995 paved the way for my rebirth in Jesus Christ! When I accepted Jesus as my Lord and my Master, I became His humble servant. Until then, I was unaware of the reality of true prayer or the Scriptures. I had never heard about any Retreat Centre and naturally, Jesus was a total stranger to me. But all this was really not my fault.

I was born and brought up in an aristocratic Hindu family. My prolonged and terribly painful illness turned out to be a truly divine plan to encounter my Lord, Jesus Christ. “We know that in all things God works for good with those who love Him, those whom He has called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

It all began with a mild pain in three of the fingers of my left hand. The pain increased gradually and the entire hand began to pain unbearably. In great despair, I felt the nagging pain spread to my whole body until I lost the sense of touch. For instance, when I hurt myself, I could never experience any pain from the wound even though it bled

I underwent brain surgery, which was unsuccessful. Following my doctor’s advise I was taken to Apollo Hospital in Chennai where an MRI scan was taken. Finally my illness was diagnosed as a very rare fatal disease called Sryngomielia.

Very soon, I became aware that this was only the beginning of the dreaded disease, which was slowly, but surely killing me. By now, I had learnt to surrender to my condition. My speech was impaired, my left foot was twisted. I had lost all my hair, I could barely sit properly, and was unable to lift up my hands or even move my fingers with ease. All this while, I had been losing control over my entire body and had to depend on others for all my needs.

More scanning and medical check-ups followed. The medical reports were shocking and depressing to say the very least. My disease had aggravated to its most fatal state, the highly dangerous type called Sryngohydromeilia. This is an incurable condition.

My days were numbered! I lost all hopes and began to wait for death to knock at my door. It was around this time that we heard about Divine Retreat Centre at Muringoor through a dear friend of my husband. A ray of hope flashed across my mind; my husband too became optimistic.

After a lot of preparations, we made it to the Centre. I was accommodated in one of the rooms for the sick and disabled. During my retreat, I seemed to be sitting before a God who was a total stranger to me. I did not know how I ought to pray (Romans 8:28) Yet, I had several strange experiences that were beyond my understanding. My heart craved to take in the agony of the world as I began to intercede for the needs of others in pain.

Then came a divine message, announced from the stage: “The Lord is touching Shylaja.” I claimed the healing message as my own and instantly experienced a unique sensation as if a current of electricity had passed through my entire body! For a while, I lost consciousness.

When I woke up, I realized I could lift up my arms without any pain at all; my body was hot and flushed and I was sweating profusely. I was astonished to find that I had regained my sense of touch and I could speak clearly. My deformed foot was corrected and I stood up to walk about without any support. That night, I slept peacefully for the first time in ten years!

After the retreat, I went for a complete medical check-up in Sree Chitra Hospital, Trivandrum. The doctors declared me completely cured of all the earlier symptoms of my disease. They were curious to know where I had undergone such a miraculous treatment. My husband and I were quick to explain to them all that had happened during our retreat at the Divine Centre. The doctors openly admitted: "Only Almighty God can perform such wonderful miracles in our lives. Your miraculous healing proves without a shadow of a doubt that there exists a living and loving God."

The doctors were right. When I look at myself today, I know that I am a living proof of a loving God. In thanksgiving, I offer my life to Him through my humble services to the poor and needy. And I am only too glad to witness for my Lord, Jesus my Healer!

"Though the Lord may give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide Himself any more, but your eyes shall see your teacher." (Isaiah 30:20-21)
