Prayer of the Month

I surrendered my daughter's wedding to Jesus - Arlene Barreto, Mumbai

I am a teacher by profession. This is my fifth retreat at Divine Retreat Centre. My husband expired in 1987 due to an accident on board the ship. Due to a problem in the apartment that I was staying in, I was taken to court by my own uncle within seven months of my husband’s death. I could not forgive him and his family. During my retreat in 2007, after my counselling I sat in the chapel and forgave them and prayed for each one of them and all those who were against my family. I felt the coolness around me and knew that my God was there for me and He would help the widow and the orphaned. Fr. Augustine Vallooran called my name and said, “The Lord is my Shepherd, there is nothing I will want” (Ps 23:1). In 2008, the priest called my name again and said “Fresh and green are the pastures where He gives you repose” (Ps 23:2). I have always claimed these whenever I was faced with trials and difficulties. I had also put my petition for sale of my dad’s property which we tried selling for almost twelve years but with no success while he was alive. He expired in 2005. Within a week of my return from the retreat, our merciful God heard my plea and sent a buyer who paid much more than we expected. In 2009 I came with my daughter and son in law to give thanks to the Lord. When my daughter’s marriage was fixed, after making all the arrangements I attended a retreat hoping that everything would be ready. But when I returned I found that her wedding gown was half done and the dresses of the bridesmaid and flower girls were not stitched. My daughter was disappointed as there were only a few days for the wedding and it was Christmas time. It was very difficult to get a good tailor to complete everything. We surrendered it all to Jesus and asked Him to be in control of the situation. Final four days prior to the wedding, I told her that with her limited knowledge of stitching, to try and do what she can. She and her husband with the help of a few friends completed it all. My Lord and Saviour who changed water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana, did not let us down though many obstacles came our way. He made everything possible and the wedding took place as planned. It was a surprise to everyone. I praise and thank the good Lord for being with us.
