Prayer of the Month

I put my alcoholism in the surrender bucket - Peter Valerian Saldanha, Mumbai

I am fifty two years old. Due to financial problems, I started working in hotel industry from the age of eighteen; the company of friends got me into drinking alcohol from nineteen to the age of thirty nine years. At age thirty seven, I turned complete alcoholic and my thirteen years of married life suffered. But still God gave me good health and two beautiful daughters. My wife’s prayers and tears at the foot of the Cross of Jesus became an inner force for me to attend a one day retreat at Kalyan, Tabor Ashram in November 1998. Then I got an urge to attend a retreat at Divine Retreat Centre in December 1998. During the surrender session, I wrote my bad habit on a small piece of paper and put it in the surrender bucket. On Tuesday I made a good confession. By listening to the Word of God especially, “But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today's trouble is enough for today” (Mt 6:33-34), I took a decision to give up this and other bad habits. After that until today, I did not get the urge to drink alcohol. I started reading Psalm 91 regularly and believing in Jesus’ words: I tell you, do not worry about your life…. your Heavenly Father knows that you need all these things” (Mt 6:25-32) The Lord also blessed my family abundantly: a) My elder daughter was healed of asthma b) When we were made to leave our father’s house, God provided a new place; c) In my place of work - in the middle of the sea - I see God’s hand working for me very strongly. I praise and thank the Lord.
