Taking His word to the ends of the earth

By Fr. Michael Payyapilly VC

Years ago, there was a famous movie that had a very different storyline. The protagonist of the story played a negative character. He falls in love with a girl only to take vengeance. And one day he takes her up to the terrace of a building and from there he throws her down and kills her. This movie was hugely popular because of the different story line and the protagonist was well appreciated for his terrific performance. A few months after the release of this movie, the newspapers brought out an article about a young boy who threw his lover off the terrace of their building. When this boy was questioned, he apparently said that he did it trying to emulate this very famous movie. People can choose to be influenced and people can get influenced. For the past many decades, the media has played such a strong role in influencing all our lives. Even picking up a bathing soap, when we go shopping, is influenced by what we have watched on television the day before. Today the media is a money spinner and the media calls the shots. Due to the media our world has become smaller and the media has influenced it so much that our world is not like it used to be before. We know and experience how life has changed with media sneaking into our daily life.

Recently I heard a mother tell say, "My biggest mistake in life was getting my son a personal television to keep in his room. Today I cannot control him. I cannot even throw that television out because he is so addicted to it. His life is restricted to him and his television and it has spoilt his way of thinking". Now these are not surprising words. Maybe most parents are struggling with this. They do not know how to control the influence of the media on their families. A mother told me. "Father, my son fills his stomach with the internet. He does not even want food". The blame has always been put on the media. The media has been seen as the evil. Parents see the throwing away of the television as the answer to the problems they face with their children or their family.

Getting rid of the media is not the answer and nor is it going to be possible. But making use of the media to counter the negative influence it has had, would be the more appropriate thing to do. Even though the Church has made use of the media for its purpose of evangelisation somehow it has not been enough and we have ended up using the traditional methods of evangelisation more than venturing out into the dangerous and uncertain waters of evangelisation through the media. There have been a few religious Orders that have made the ministry of the media their charism. Bishop Fulton Sheen was one of the most popular Catholic leaders to use the media to bring the Word into the homes of people. His ministry would touch many the world over. But even his fruitful ministry did not actually inspire many in the Church to be brave enough to venture into this difficult ministry. He showed the way and not many had the courage to follow it.

For long the Divine Retreat Centre has been preaching the Word in Kerala. The thirst for the Word was seen in the fact that millions have attended retreats in the Divine Retreat Centre. The outreach ministry from Divine helped many people listen to the Word. Lives have changed and families have been healed. People have been able to take the fragments of their broken life and start walking in faith believing that the Lord is there for them. Through its magazines and newsletters Divine would reach out to many. But in this fast paced world this was not enough. There had to be something more. Divine had to reach out to a larger audience.

In prayer the Lord led the Vincentian Fathers to begin the use of the media that was common to nearly everyone across the world. The television was the best way to enter directly into the homes of the millions across the world. If the television media was corrupting the minds of the younger generation, using that same media to counter this evil, was what the Lord was calling for. The proclamation of the Word, round the clock, in different languages to touch the lives of the people who sit at home was what the Lord wanted. This is what prompted the Divine Vision. Today Divine Vision reaches out to more than sixty countries across the world. In India it reaches out through the Goodness TV. The Word is the Lord's and how it works and the miracles it brings it left upto the Lord. The Divine Vision has brought about great healing because the Lord's Word is proclaimed. Just a few days back a woman came and held my hand and thanked me and Divine for having touched the life of her family. I thought she was referring to the retreat. But she said that she was from Denmark and they regularly watch the Divine Vision programmes there. Watching and listening to the Word of God on their television sets has blessed their family abundantly. Denmark is not a place where we would expect His Word to go all the way from India. But His Word has power to heal wherever we are. Giving our readiness to be used by Him is all that He requires.

What lies ahead are hard days. The paths are not clear. Financial burdens that are huge; personnel that are skilled; equipments that need to be upgraded nearly every 6 months in order to keep pace. The days that lie ahead are hard. But the Lord never said that any ministry we do is ever going to be easy. It is a Leap of Faith. A leap into the darkness. But that is what Divine has been in the past twenty years. It has been a leap into the darkness. And there the Lord has brought in light at the right times. But the fruits will be there. When the disciples went out to the different parts of the world, it never was easy. They never knew if they would even come back to their home towns or would even meet the others again. Long voyages to unknown lands bringing a totally new Gospel to strange people was what their ministry was filled with. But it was those hard days that they went through which helped spread the message of Christ. Today we have the faith because a few of them decided to take that leap of faith. The Divine Vision is taking this leap of faith believing that the Lord will be there once we jump.

When the disciples went out on these journeys to unknown lands, they had one assurance that there were the faithful who were supporting and praying for them. They were always assured of those prayers. This is DivineÆs appeal to the faithful of the Lord and to all who have been touched by DivineÆs ministry û Divine needs your support and prayers. When we step into the darkness of the unknown, may we always have the assurance that the faithful are there supporting us. And may His Word proclaimed banish the darkness that the evil one has spread.
