Available: Heaven for your heart

By Maria Sangeetha, DRC

Every human being passing through the shores of life leaves behind footprints that others would read. Whether we desire it or not, each one of us is a missionary. Each one of us carries a message. A message that is proclaimed more by the life we live than by the words we speak. But the question for each of us is - whether I carry a message of life or of death. It is a choice. The message that passes into eternity is life. Every other message is death. For every other message promotes a passing phase, a dying reality – be it human attachment or worldly security. So if my life should be truly “life-giving”, Jesus needs to be my message.

Jesus too had a message to give when he walked this earth. His life was brief. Yet his message lives forever - every human heart thirsts for it. Jesus proclaimed the kingdom of heaven. “The kingdom of heaven is at hand and is amidst you” and not simply in the beyond. “The kingdom of heaven is within you, in your heart” and not in some fantasy that leaves your heart only more thirsty, parched up and broken.

It is true that heaven is where there are “no more tears and no more fears.” But heaven above all is where God reigns. Heaven is where constantly His glory is proclaimed and rejoiced over.

That is why the greatest experience one can ever have is when one’s heart is set ablaze with the love for God. It is a moment when heaven comes into existence within us, simply because as it is in heaven, God comes to reign here in the depths of our being.

When this Divine fire of love touches the heart of the human being, unheard of things happen! It is love that refuses to hoodwink us. One leaves behind familiar and secure shores. One readily launches out on a journey that one knows would demand blood and tears. It is a journey that only a brave heart can dream of – because it dreams of that which is beyond the known.

Our hearts are made for love. By the way in which it beats, one knows it is made for something bigger than ourselves - a love that would overwhelm and consume us completely. We would have to go out of ourselves completely to live out this love. As Jesus promised, we would have to die to ourselves to take in this heaven...

When the love for God and the thirst for His mission takes over, that’s when the heart loves to its maximum potential. We can no more settle for the mediocrity of passing thrills. We are set for superlatives. This love emboldens us to stretch our vision beyond the horizons and to claim until the ends of the earth. Freedom and dignity, joy and boldness – this is our heritage.

Every human being is a believer and a brand ambassador! Each person believes and lives for and proclaims a “truth”! This truth is that which signifies security for them. Zacchaeus was a man who knew the importance of the riches of this world. Money was the only thing that made sense to him. The derision people held for his profession, the emptiness of relationships, the loneliness caused by his selfishness – all these were of no consequence to him when he sought to pursue his religion of materialism. And yet when the fire of Jesus passed his way, he threw away the religion and faith he had held onto during all the years of his existence. Jesus took the initiative to step aside from the crowd and its demands, to dine with him. At that meal in his own home, Zacchaeus tasted a love that only Christ could share. Zacchaeus responded, stepping aside from the track he followed, shedding all that he ever held onto. Or rather, all that ever held him.

The Samaritan woman had spent all her life investing in the security of human attachments and pleasure. She was despised and isolated by the rest of the society. Yet she held on blindly to a way of life that would only leave her more thirsty and weary. The fire of Jesus passed her way. She, without a mention or even without looking back, forsook the cistern of pleasures. She was like Moses, who after encountering the fire of God in the burning bush, was emboldened to go to the very Pharaoh and country that despised and threatened him. Like Moses she led her people towards the destination of Life.

That is heavenly love. It liberates us from every bondage to experience the true thrill and full experience of being alive. We become vital messengers of life. Let us then seek to experience the fire of Jesus. This alone shall bring life to our hearts and light to our world.

Oh God who holds the entire universe – take hold of my heart... Give me the orientations of Your heart of love and purity. Let me love You intensely and seek You unceasingly... Let Your love be the reality that moulds my every moment... Let me, initiated by this fire of Your love, bring to others the consolation of Your light.
