CAN WE FLY STRAIGHT TO HEAVEN NOW? - By Maneesha Mathias, India

"If I had the wings of an angel, Straight to the heaven I would fly Bringing Good news to the people..."

I first heard this song when I was still in school. It so touched my heart that I remember the words and also the actions of the little children as they danced to this song. I remember wondering if we could ever have the wings of an angel and if we could fly straight to heaven.

In Luke 11:1, we read that Jesus was in prayer and the Apostles waited for Him to finish and then asked Him to teach them to pray. The Bible repeatedly tells us that Jesus prayed for long hours and at times the whole night through. It is common that any human being would get very irritated and angry if made to wait - then from where did the Apostles receive such patience to wait? Did they really patiently wait or is it that they had no choice?

I think they probably had no choice. And I say this because, In Luke 10:38, we read the incident of Jesus with Martha and Mary. Martha was in the kitchen dishing up delicacies for her very important guest but Mary simply sat at the feet of Jesus. When Jesus was questioned by Martha, Jesus very calmly informs her that Mary had chosen the "better part." What is this better part?

In our homes if there is a visitor and a very important one, we try our best to make him comfortable. In making him comfortable, the first thing we want to offer him is a delicious meal. We know Martha was clearly irritated that she was left alone in the kitchen. As such Martha would have tried her best to attract Mary's attention and force her into the kitchen - and that too without Jesus ever knowing of it. She knew Jesus was a great man, a wonder worker and she would never want to give him a bad impression of herself. But then we see Martha showing all her impatience in the presence of Jesus, to Jesus, which could also mean that she lost her patience.

And why did she lose her patience? She had tried her best to force her sister back into the kitchen but all her efforts had been in vain. It was in vain because Mary could not see her, could not hear her, Mary even forgot her duties as a hostess -she was totally focused on Jesus! I believe this is what Jesus meant in Matthew 6:6 - "But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you." This is what I believe Jesus means when he says "shut the door"- be one with God! Let your union with God be such that no one can disturb you; nothing can break this union.

But is this humanly possible? So many times in my ministry I hear the same complaint, "I want to pray but I cannot concentrate. Distractions come - we feel sleepy, our children distract us, and many other reasons."

This got me thinking why does this happen? Would God ask us to do something that is not possible for us to do? Never! God will never push us to do something that is difficult for us to do. He will only tell us to do this which will help us, things which are good for us. I came across a word from the bible "while they are yet speaking I will hear" (Isaiah 65:24) and then I understood 'speaking' meant being focused and having a conversation with God - if I managed that the devil was definitely fighting a losing battle. The more I tried to have a conversation with God, the more the Lord helped me and he led me to His great truths!

I have to admit that if I am watching a movie or any other program on television, that was interesting. I would never feel sleepy. I could postpone urgent work and even the distractions caused by my kids could not force me away from the television. I could watch with full concentration without missing a single word of conversation! I asked myself asking the question, "If I pray with the same earnestness then could I not achieve what until then I considered doubtful? Could I not be united with God - having a long conversation with him for hours without even knowing of the passage of time?" And with great sorrow, I admitted to myself that in the past, I was not earnest and that is why the devil could distract me so easily. In the past, the victory was his (the devil). Instead of being focused on God, I was thinking of all other things - but not anymore, definitely not anymore with the help and grace of my God.

At first it was very difficult but then as I persisted, the 'Helper' came to my rescue and I could experience something very new - feeling the Presence of God and lost in His presence; everything else lost relevance. That time is me and my God and nothing else exists. I praised God for this glorious experience! As the days went by, I was again remembering the wonderful song that touched my heart in my early childhood, and left a desire in my heart - "If I had the wings of an angel, straight to the heaven we would fly." Prayers were the wings to heaven - that took us straight to heaven!

And then the second part "bringing good news to the people…" This new togetherness would give such an experience of God and His ways that preaching meant telling the Lord "Here I go Lord, here I am standing in front of your people, speak to them, they need You so much." This led me to depend more and more on the Lord and His goodness that even in times of trials, I can be free from panic and say "I know Lord that You will change all this for my good."

This togetherness, this union through prayer has helped be to be more faithful. If it were not for my God's grace, I would have been totally lost. This is what the Lord wants us to have and that is why He told Martha, "Mary has chosen the better part, and none can take it away from her." If we strive to attain this closeness with our God, then there is nothing that can take us away from Him!
