JESUS - MY MEDITATION! - Teresa La Rive

I would like to affirm the sentiments in the words of ST. John Gabriel Perboyre. "Many people have difficulty finding a meditation book. But I have found nothing so good as the Heart of Jesus." For Jesus knows everything and nothing in man’s conscience lies hidden from Him. He knows things to come before they happen and He has no need to be taught or admonished by any one of those things that are being done on earth. I know what is expedient for my progress and how much tribulation serves to clean away the rust of my sins. Oh Jesus, You are my Meditation!

The Scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman to Jesus who had been caught in adultery and placed her in the midst of their accusing merciless fingers. The admonished in Sirach 28:4-5 aptly explains their state, "Should a man refuse mercy to his fellows, yet seek pardon for his own sins? If he who is flesh but cherishes wrath, who will forgive his sins?" The Heart of Jesus was reaching out to the accused woman and those clamouring for her to be stoned were weaving a perfect trap for the Lord. Jesus speaks to them in silence as He bends down and writes with His finger on the ground. They are not able to understand God as He speaks in silence which is why they continue to inquire of Him. So Jesus stands up and tells them, "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her."(Luke 8:7) And once more God continues to teach them lessons of the heart in silence.

Reconciliation with the One Above is not possible without first bridging the gap between brothers and between brother and sister. Jesus was bridging the gap between life and death, laying down his own Body in the flesh to bridge this gap of humanity and God.

Jesus chose the infamous place called The Skull which was shrouded with shame - a place where one would think nothing good would come out - a place despised, stained with misery and shame where criminals congregated. But when Jesus walked into this place, allowing His Body to be stretched and nailed on the wooden post, this place changed forever! Everything good for mankind flows from this place - from His Heart pierced for us. Jesus’ heart took the side of the murderers and loved them.

In this age and time, when the divinity of Jesus is under attack in a planned and systematic manner, we hear the echo of this attack at Calvary where the rulers scoffed saying, If He is the Son of God, His Chosen One..." and the mocking words of the soldiers, "If you are the King of Jews..."

Only Jesus can command human hearts. Living in the community life we share in Divine is not easy but the Lord allows His Wisdom to flow so that we can sail through. Sometimes there are stones that are thrown at us in life - the insults, humiliating words and abuses. For a person of the world, these stones are something we should reject and get rid off - a hindrance. But in our lives, these very stones will one day be a little hill we can step on so that we can gain spiritual height. Often when we stand on a little hill, we get a better view of things to heighten our spiritual perspective - that is the Way of Our Lord. Our walk in the narrow path broadens our perspective. Our God is full of paradoxes.

Sandpaper with its different grades, is rough. However when it is applied to furniture, it makes it smooth. That is how God has planned our growth - by applying the sandpaper of difficulties, of pain, of misunderstanding. It is God’s way of smoothening out our rough edges so that we can be used for His ministry. Sometimes when we tend to get short-sighted, we are not focused on Jesus. We need to fix our gaze on Jesus so that everything in our lives will snap back into focus.

In any moment of our lives, be it the springtime of sunshine or the long winter of pain, every one of us - you and I too - can repose on the Heart of Jesus as the Apostle John laid his head on the breast of our Saviour. When Jesus is our Meditation, we will be filled with the Love, Comfort, Peace and Joy that flows from the Heart of Jesus!
