"Be sure your sin will find you out" - (Numbers 32:33) Adv. A. M. Mathew

Another version of the bible for the title verse is "Sin will haunt you." This is explained clearly in Deuteronomy 28:66-67, "Your life shall hang in doubt before you; night and day you shall be in dread, with no assurance of your life. In the morning you shall say, "If only it were evening!" and at evening you shall say, "If only it were morning!" - because of the dread that your heart shall feel and the sights that your eyes shall see."

There is a true incident I recall very clearly. The wife of a drunkard jumped into a well with their two children to die. However, the children drowned but she survived. It was a police case and she faced constant harassment. She came into my lawyer's firm; lean an emaciated with a hungry look. I took her to be a beggar but my clerk told me that she was the client! I perused her case record. Thinking of the extenuating circumstances, I told her, "I will try to help you out." Her answer surprised me, "I do not want to live. I want to die. I asked "Why?" "Sir, it is more than six months since I slept. In the night, when I am about to sleep, the terrifying death scene of my beloved children come alive in my mind: the protruding eyes and swollen stomachs and many other horrifying images. I spend the whole night crying without a wink of sleep. I wake up in the morning hearing the cruel scolding and uncharitable allegations of my neighbours. Then comes the unceasing harassment of the police. Sir, I am tired of life. I want to die."

Tragedy is inevitable in the life of a sinner. "But is there no other end for the agonizing and miserable sinner?" I wondered. No. There was certainly no human solution. Who can go into the past and erase the tragic consequences of the sin already committed from the canvas of history? None except Jesus of Nazareth "who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God."(John 1:13) Yes! As the angel said to Joseph about Mary, "...for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.(Matthew 1:20) and as St. Paul proclaimed to the Colossians, "He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together." (Colossians 1:17)

Remember what Jesus said the Pharisees, "Before Abraham was, I am." (John 8:58) and what Yahweh said to Moses, "I am who I am." (Exodus 3:14) "Yes, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever." (Hebrews 13:8) Time and space do not restrict his activities. As He himself said, "My Father is working still, and I am working" (John 5:17)

Jesus, The Son of God, God Himself (John 10:30) brings forward the past into the present at the time of confession, when the penitent turns to God in godly grief. Then, the compassionate Lord, will not only wipe away guilt and sorrow from our hearts, but also erases the sinful incidents with all its evil consequences from the Book of Judgment. The LORD says, "I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more." (Jeremiah 31:34)

The merciful Lord beckons the heavy-laden, assuring peace. (Matthew 11:28) Let His words ring in our ears always, "Go in peace, do not sin again." (John 8:10) We have the assurances of the Word of God. "If the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:38)

No longer can sin haunt us because it is not in existence any more. Praise God!
