Soldiers of God - E. K. Mariya

I studied in a convent school run by the Bethany Sisters. Every Monday before the morning prayers, all the children of my class would be called by the class teacher and were asked to tell one good deed we had done on the previous Sunday. I was in the 3rd Standard and my class teacher used to tell us, "When you do something good whisper to Jesus - "Lord I offer this sacrifice to save a sinner." The Sister would give examples: "In the midst of your play time whenever you are asked to run errands for your mother to the nearby shop, or any other small tasks that she would ask you and you do not want to do it. When you make a little sacrifice and do it joyfully without grumbling, offering that sacrifice to save a sinner, Jesus will be pleased and a sinner will be saved!" As little children, we used to collect points for all the good deeds we did through out the week and then feel very happy within us that we had saved a sinner. We would count the number of sinners we had saved for Jesus. She would then tell us, 'Now you are recruited in the Kingdom of God as the Soldiers of Jesus! Jesus is the Commander-in- Chief and you are all His soldiers bringing back the prisoners captured by the enemy. As I grew up, I realized that my teacher was thus teaching us to always think of Jesus and remain in prayer at all times for sinners.

The woman who suffered from blood hemorrhage for twelve years, was healed when she in fact made a small prayer in her heart. "If I touch His cloak I will be healed."(Mark 5:21-34) Jesus listens even to the whispers of our hearts. He takes care of the minutest needs of ours. We can achieve this by praying constantly. (Philippians 4:6)

Today, the world needs soldiers to save the world. As St. Paul writes in the Second Letter to Timothy, Chapter 2:3-4, "Take your part in suffering as a loyal soldier of Christ Jesus. A soldier on active service wants to please his commanding officer and so does not get mixed up in the affairs of civilian life." A soldier is a loyal servant of his country and is ready even to sacrifice his own life to save the honour of his country.

Jesus Christ is a true soldier in this aspect. To save His regiment that is, His people, He went to the extent of even dying on the cross. The essence of a true soldier is loyalty. Once Jesus has enrolled us into His battalion as soldiers, what we ought to do is to lead a pure life like Jesus. As a soldier does not get mixed up in the affairs of civilian life and his focus is on his country , so should one be who is in the ministry of the Lord. Our focus being Jesus and our loyalty being in truly loving and serving Him -. "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be satisfied with what you have; For God has said, 'I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.'" (Hebrews 13:5)

A soldier is helpless without his weapon and a disciple of Jesus becomes helpless without prayer as a weapon to save ourselves and others. "Be persistent in prayer, and keep alert as you pray, giving thanks to God."(Colossians 4:2) The true quality of a disciple of Jesus is doing good to others and helping others, forgetting our own needs. "Do not forget to do good and to help one another because these are the sacrifices that please God." (Hebrews 13:16)

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit gives them. Likewise, there are different ways of serving but the same Lord is served. We are all soldiers of God's Kingdom serving in various departments but the ultimate goal is to be for Jesus. "Those who believe in God may be concerned with giving their time to doing good deeds which are good and useful to everyone." (Titus 3:8)

No matter what we do, where we serve or as what we serve, what is important is our focus - "keep busy always in your work for the Lord, since you know that nothing you do in the Lord’s service is ever useless." (1 Corinthians 15:58)

In everything that we do, we must always try to project Jesus believing that we are His soldiers even ready to die for Him. Like St. Paul says, "For what is life? To me, it is Christ. Death then will bring more." (Philippians 1:21)

As the daughter of an Army officer, I truly believe that I too am a soldier enrolled in Christ's Regiment, ready to receive orders from my God; to do my part as He has called me. I would like to repeat as the Psalmist says in Psalm 73:25-26, "What else have in heaven but you? Since I have you, what else could I want on earth? My mind and my body may grow weak but God is my strength; He is all I ever need."
